New reports suggest that, during their relationship, pop icon Britney Spears became pregnant and considered keeping the child, but music singer Justin Timberlake allegedly expressed a desire for her to have an abortion, stating he wasn’t ready to become a father.

Spears revealed in her new memoir that her childhood sweetheart Timberlake pressured her to have an abortion.

“I loved Justin so much,” she revealed in her book, according to TMZ. “I always expected us to have a family together one day. This would just be much earlier than I’d anticipated.”

However, as Spears claims, Timberlake was not receptive to the idea of being a father even though he essentially agreed to it by getting Spears pregnant. Although Spears initially didn’t want the abortion, Timberlake reportedly talked her into it. Like so many women she though abortion would save their relationship but it destroyed it.

“It was a surprise, but for me, it wasn’t a tragedy. I loved Justin so much. I always expected us to have a family together one day. This would just be much earlier than I’d anticipated,” Spears writes of the pregnancy in the book. “But Justin definitely wasn’t happy about the pregnancy. He said we weren’t ready to have a baby in our lives, that we were way too young.”

A rep for Timberlake did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

She writes in the book: “If it had been left up to me alone, I never would have done it. And yet Justin was so sure that he didn’t want to be a father.”

Spears writes of her experience undergoing the abortion: “To this day, it’s one of the most agonizing things I have ever experienced in my life.”

Research shows 70% of women getting abortions say they were pressured by their husband or partner to get one.
